Volunteer: Food Bank

Description

Mazzoni Center, Philadelphia’s oldest AIDS Service Organization, has an opening for a volunteer to work in Vivian’s Cupboard, the agency’s food bank. Vivian’s Cupboard is specifically geared to serve individuals who are HIV-positive, and is free and open to any HIV positive individual by referral. In the last year Vivian’s Cupboard supplied groceries to 1062 households, consisting of 1428 adults and 597 children in a total of 6092 visits in the year.

The food bank volunteer will assist the Food Bank Coordinator in:

  • Greeting visitors to the food bank and verifying eligibility to participate in the program.
  • Input client service information into database.
  • Stock Shelves and assist with unloading food bank deliveries.
  • Prepare food bags for distribution.
  • Assist with keeping food bank area clean and orderly
  • Provide relief when Food Bank Coordinator is not available.
  • Protect client-identifying information at all times in compliance with agency Confidentiality Policy and Pennsylvania Act 148.
  • Such other tasks as may be assigned.

Skills

  • Comfort working with people from diverse ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, and sexual orientations/gender identities and presentations.
  • Volunteer should have demonstrated ability to “think on their feet.”
  • Ability to lift boxes approximately 20-30 pounds.
  • Entry level/basic computer skills.
  • Able to handle multiple tasks, have good collaborative and interpersonal skills, have problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Availability between the hours of 10AM and 4PM.  Greatest need is on Tuesday mornings and the first Friday of the month. The food bank has set hours of operation and adherence to a schedule is an important part of this volunteer position.
