November 13, 2017
To Mazzoni Center Community:
The Mazzoni Board of Directors met on October 19th and we are sharing an update on the news and actions that resulted from that meeting here with you. We hope to see many of you at our ribbon cutting and community celebration on November 16. For details and to register, visit our website.
New Board Executive Committee
We are pleased to announce the appointment of new officers for the Executive Committee of the Board. Christopher Pope will assume the role of President,Louis A. Thomas, Ph.D. will serve asVice President and Acting Secretary, and Anthony F. Verdi, Ph.D. will remain in the role of Treasurer. The Board voted to make the Secretary position a temporary appointment through February 2018 as a group of new Board members is expected to begin its service with Mazzoni Center later this month. In February, the Board will revisit the role of Secretary with the hope that a new Board member will serve in that capacity. You can read bios for the new Executive Committee members here.
Ongoing Board Recruitment
We reported in our last update that interest in Board service and the caliber of our initial pool of new candidates has been extremely high. Staff and community members will have the opportunity to meet this new pool of board members at the ribbon cutting for Mazzoni Center’s building on November 16. We are encouraged by the diverse group of people who are volunteering to bring their unique perspectives and expertise to the table and by the excitement they have demonstrated for being part of Mazzoni Center’s future.
The independent investigation into the allegations surrounding Mazzoni Center’s former Medical Director is complete and has been submitted to the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine. It is now the responsibility of the Pennsylvania Medical Board to address these issues moving forward. Because of the sensitive nature of the patient information included in this report, we are not at liberty to share it publicly. We know that this may be dissatisfying to some people; but we are hopeful that, as a community, we can continue our march forward and advance Mazzoni Center’s mission as a safe, welcoming place, where high-quality, comprehensive health and wellness services are provided in an LGBTQ-focused and supportive environment that recognizes and celebrates the differences within the communities we serve.

In addition, the Board has chosen Advanced Corporate Research Solutions, LLC (ACRS) to guide us in the search process. This firm, which successfully placed our current interim CEO, was selected following evaluation and due diligence. Led by Amy Smith, search consultant, and charged with acting as our partner in identifying a diverse, qualified candidate pool, ACRS will be a valuable addition to our efforts to select a new executive leader for Mazzoni Center. We encourage you to read the firm’s and Amy’s full bio here.
Our next step is to finalize the job description and initiate the search process, which we expect will begin in the next week.
