Judy Morrissey, LCSW
Director

Judy received her MSW from Gallaudet University in Washington, DC and undergraduate degree from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Judy's clinical background includes a range of inpatient and outpatient experience in LGBT settings, including Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, where she worked exclusively with people with HIV/AIDS. She is particularly interested in trauma, addictions treatment and co-occurring disorders. Judy provides clinical supervision in Open Door and coordinates the MSW Intern program.

Susan Bash, LCSW
Therapist

Susan received her Masters in Social Work from Yeshiva University in NY and her undergraduate degree in Sociology from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. Susan works with seniors at an Independent Living program where she helps elders meet their physical and emotional needs, in addition to her work at Mazzoni. Susan has had special training with women and eating disorders; yoga and relaxation; and children, adolescents, and families. Susan has a personal and professional interest in understanding the self and relationships.

Eucharia Borden, LCSW
Therapist

Eucharia earned her Msater of Social Work from Temple University and her undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). In addition to her work at Mazzoni, Eucharia works at Social Work Consultation Services, supervising Widener University graduate and undergraduate social work student interns in the Child and Family Services clinical training program. She has worked extensively with people living with chronic mental illness in both inpatient and outpatient settings. For the past four years, she has worked primarily with people living with HIV/AIDS, many of whom present with LGBT-related treatment issues and co-occurring disorders. Eucharia has particular interests in the multiple effects of HIV/AIDS in minority communities, women's issues, trauma, relationships, and the effects of violence in families and communities.

James Brennan, MSW, LSW
Therapist

James received his Masters of Social Work degree from Widener University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Slippery Rock University. James draws on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy as a main framework for treatment, but draws on other theories where appropriate to meet the needs of each individual client. James has experience working with diverse populations in both in-patient and out-patient settings. James values both client-centered and strengths-based approaches as he views each treatment approach to be as unique as the client. James' interests include working with people living with/affected by HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ-specific issues, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and resolving family/relational conflicts.

Lee Carson, MSW, LSW
Therapist

Lee is a native of Rochester, NY where he received his Master's degree in Social Work and he is also a credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor. He has worked in the field of HIV prevention for over 5 years and has worked in chemical dependency rehabilitation for 10 years. He presently works full time in behavioral science research, with a focus on HIV-prevention needs for Black men who have sex with men. Clinically, he believes in strengths-based work with clients, helping them to realize the tools they already possess to create the change they want to see for themselves.

Kevin Castro-Convers, PhD
Therapist

Kevin is a licensed psychologist who specializes in counseling psychology. His clinical areas of interest include individual and couples therapy from a psychodynamic perspective; being both bicultural and bilingual, Kevin is also interested in various multicultural issues in psychology. He also has an interest in personality disorders, eating disorders, and the integration of sexuality and spirituality. Kevin works full-time as a licensed psychologist with adult populations at the Hall-Mercer MH / MR Center at Pennsylvania Hospital.

Cynthia Closs, MSS
Therapist

Cynthia earned her Master of Social Services degree from Bryn Mawr College, and her undergraduate degree from Temple University. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania. Cynthia has nearly ten years of experience working with a diverse group of individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS. She has been trained in EMDR therapy, and completed a three-year intensive training in Gestalt therapy. In addition to her work at Mazzoni Center, Cynthia provides therapeutic services to LGBT-identified and questioning youth. She has a particular interest in working with persons living with HIV/AIDS, trauma, addiction, depression, grief and loss issues and young adults.

Joseph Dubak, MA, NCC, LPC
Assessment Specialist, Therapist

Joe has his Masters in Counseling Services from Rider University. He has been working in the field of mental health for eighteen years in both the public and private sectors. Joe is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state of Pennsylvania with a diversified background in the field of mental health and substance abuse. He is a highly-skilled clinician in the area of assessment and differential diagnosis with adolescents and adults. Joe has a passion for working with the LGBT population. In addition, Joe also has experience working in the managed care industry, serving as a Clinical Care Manager for mental health and substance abuse.

Stephen Grillo, MEd., LPC
Therapist

Stephen received his Master's in Counseling Psychology at Temple University. He completed his undergraduate work at George Washington University. Stephen is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania. He currently works as a part-time therapist at Mazzoni Center. His full-time work is with the first judicial district of Pennsylvania as a Clinical Evaluator in the treatment court program. His interests lie in the coming out process and empowering individuals to meet their goals.

Joe Ippolito, LCSW
Therapist

Joe is a 5th year doctoral candidate in Psychology at Chestnut Hill College and a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in Pennsylvania. Joe is a full-time Therapist at Mazzoni and facilitates an HIV support group in addition to Oasis, a support group dealing with issues relating to gender identity. Joe is a Committee Member and Treasurer for Philadelphia's Annual Trans-Health Conference and Transgender Co-Chair for the American Psychological Association (APA) committee on Transgender and Intersex Issues.

Liza Linder, MSW, LCSW
Therapist

Liza has been a licensed social worker since 1998. She received a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Her undergraduate background includes Women's and Gay and Lesbian studies. Before joining Mazzoni Center, Liza worked for seven years as a therapist in community mental health. Liza's areas of interest include: Women's issues, OCD and anxiety disorders, drug and alcohol addiction and recovery, eating disorders, HIV/AIDS and safer sex counseling, and internalized homophobia/religious conflicts.

John Lutz, MCAT, ATR-BC
Therapist

John received his Master of Creative Arts Therapy from Hahnemann University, and a B.F.A. with a concentration in creative arts therapy from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He has fifteen years experience in both inpatient and outpatient capacities with a number of populations including the chronically mentally ill, adolescents, LGBT and the elderly. John is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania and is registered and board-certified with the American Art Therapy Association. John works full-time in outpatient group therapy with the elderly. John uses both visual and verbal techniques in his practice working with HIV/AIDS, grief/loss, body image, self-esteem and acceptance.

Cherie Older, MSW, LCSW
Intake Coordinator / Therapist

Cherie has a Bachelor of Science from State University of New York - Binghamton, and a Masterof Social Work from Temple University. She has a particular interest in the Cognitive-Behavioral modality, but is eclectic in her treatment approach.

Cherie is most likely the first contact you will have at Mazzoni's Open Door program. As Intake Coordinator, Cherie conducts a brief evaluative interview with each new client, and provides information and resources, as requested.

Jen Przewoznik, MSW, LSW
Therapist

Jen received her MSW from Temple University and undergraduate degree in English Education from New York University. She has experience working on LGBTQ issues on the clinical level and in public policy arenas. Jen works part-time at Mazzoni Center and teaches English Composition at Middlesex County College in New Jersey. Drawing from Strengths-Based and Feminist theories in her work, Jen is particularly interested in the ways in which sociopolitical factors create conditions of concern for clients. She has also done extensive anti-tobacco industry work and is a certified smoking cessation facilitator.

Carly Schulman, MSS, LSW
Therapist

Carly is a licensed social worker who received her Master of Social Services from Bryn Mawr College. Her clinical areas of interest are broad, ranging from trauma-related issues, to finding and maintaining a balance in daily life. For the past several years, she has worked with families, adolescents, groups, and in community-building endeavors. She is also experienced in working with eating disorders.

Julie Sponsler, MA, LMFT
Therapist

Julie is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), who did her training and received her Master of Counseling Psychology, with an emphasis in Spiritural Psychology, from the University of Santa Monica (CA). She earned her Bachelors degree in Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh. She has over twelve years experience in the mental health field, and has worked with many different populations. Specifically, Julie has a strong background and interest in treating addictions, eating disorders, depression, HIV/AIDS-related issues, trauma, and relationship issues. Julie draws from many different healing modalities, including Self Psychology, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, experientially-based techniques, such as Voice Dialogue and Art Therapy.

Scott Stevens, M.D.
Psychiatrist

Scott is a board-certified psychiatrist who did his medical training at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City, where he subsequently worked doing psychiatric outreach to the underserved of the lower east side
of New York. In addition to now working as a psychiatrist at Mazzoni,
Scott also works at the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Center, an
outpatient clinic that works with homeless military veterans. In terms
of clinical orientation, Scott believes in a non-dogmatic approach,
and feels that the journey toward mental wellness must be self-directed by the client, who defines his or her own life goals and designs a unique path toward those goals with the aid of their care provider.

Alison Wortman, MSW, LSW
Therapist

Alison is a licensed social worker who received her Master of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice, and her undergraduate degree in psychology from Wesleyan University. Her areas of interest include working in the arena of addictions, sex therapy, couples work and treatment of depression. Alison has worked with both inpatient and outpatient populations, and enjoys working both with adults and older adolescents. Her work in informed by both interpersonal therapy and psychodynamic theories, but she maintains an eclectic approach to meet each and every client's individual and unique treatment goals and needs.

Cindy Phillips
Intern / Therapist

Cindy is currently pursuing her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Drexel University specializing in Health Psychology. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from SUNY-Brockport. Her main area of interest is in sleep research and has worked with children, adolescents and adults. In addition, she has worked with individuals with major medical illness (Sickle Cell Disease, HIV, Developmental Delays, etc.). She is trained primarily in cognitive-behavioral strategies but has an eclectic approach.
