Meeting Hate with Love

  • Mazzoni Center Family & Community Medicine, 809 Locust Street
  • Signs from the 2015 Philly Trans March
This afternoon we are expecting the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) to protest outside Mazzoni Center’s medical practice with hateful messages targeting transgender people.
The WBC is notorious for their extreme, vitriolic messages and speech - their past targets have included the LGBT community, Catholics, Muslims, and Jews, as well as U.S. soldiers and their families. They have specifically chosen to protest Mazzoni Center because of the care and services we provide to the trans and gender nonconforming communities.
In fact we could not be more proud of our work and its impact -- just ask Anita*, whose child was able to go back to school because of our legal services; or have a conversation with Cynthia, whose case manager was able to get her insurance coverage and life-saving medication; not to mention Glen, who has now transitioned successfully thanks to the excellent medical andbehavioral health services he received at Mazzoni.
I want to thank all of you who have voiced your disgust at the WBC tactics, and your intention to stand up to their ugly display. The outpouring of support is a testament to the value of our work, and to the amazing goodwill of so many in Philadelphia.
Today I’m asking if you would consider another form of support. While impassioned words and public demonstrations of unity make our voices heard by the media for fleeting moments, a donation sustains our work and the people we care for - with a meal, a place to sleep, a medical visit, a consultation.
Long after these nasty protesters have come and gone, Mazzoni Center will be here: continuing to welcome patients with respect, with dignity, and with compassionate care.
We know that the real defeat of bigotry and hate is in continuing to support and serve our community.
Thank you!
