National LGBT Health Awareness Week: March 27-31
This week (March 27-31) marks the 15th annual National LGBT Health Awareness Week, and Mazzoni Center is proud to be among the 97 partner organizations across the U.S. supporting this initiative. Started in 2003 and held each year by the National Coalition for LGBT Health, this week serves to educate the LGBT community as well as policymakers about health disparities in the LGBT community.
The theme for this year’s National LGBT Health Awareness Week is “ACT OUT for LGBT Health!: Action on Health Access and Equity.” Some of the most pressing issues facing LGBT individuals include access to public accommodations, structural health disparities, discrimination in healthcare, and behavioral health outcomes. The major goals this year are to create positive action for LGBT healthcare access by raising awareness of LGBT health disparities among policymakers, the public and the LGBT community; and to educate the public about efforts to reduce stigma and discrimination LGBT individuals face in the healthcare system.
The Coalition and partner organizations will be holding several Twitter chats and webinars this week for people to engage with the event and participate online.
