Public Hearing on Youth Homelessness Thursday, April 28 at City Hall
40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ.
Since 2009 there has been a 73% increase in the number of Philadelphia public school students who have experienced homelessness.
There are a total of 70 emergency shelter beds for youth in Philadelphia.
These are just a few of the sobering statistics that underscore the crisis of youth homelessness in Philadelphia, and across the U.S.
Mazzoni Case Management Supervisor Kate Gormley will join representatives from several other youth serving agencies -- including Project HOME, Covenant House PA, Education Law Center, Juvenile Law Center and Valley Youth House -- for a public hearing today at City Hall on the issue of youth homelessness. The hearing is the first of its kind to focus on the issue.
Kate helped launch our adolescent drop-in clinic more than five years ago, so she has seen firsthand how many young people are impacted by homelessness/unstable housing on a day-to-day basis, and how that affects their physical and emotional well-being and their ability to access things like health care, education, and employment. She recently oversaw a year-long collaborative project between Mazzoni Center and Project HOME that successfully placed three formerly homeless LGBTQ youth into permanent housing in Center City. (More on this story here).
Members of the public are invited to join us at City Hall today, and add their voices and learn more about what we can all do to advocate for the youth in our communities. If you can’t attend in person, you can stream the hearing live.
We’ll be tweeting and posting more in the days and weeks to come on the issue of youth homelessness. Look for updates on how Mazzoni and others are working to support vulnerable youth in Philadelphia, and especially LGBTQ youth, by working to connect them to housing and other essential resources, providing health care access, peer support groups, legal services and more.
