Updated April 18, 2017 - Statement from Jimmy Ruiz, MD on behalf of Mazzoni Center's Board of Directors
On April 13, 2017, Dr. Robert Winn tendered, and we accepted, his resignation as medical director of Mazzoni Center. We have taken immediate steps to ensure that there is no interruption in care for his patients. Additionally, Dr. Shanin Gross has been named acting medical director, and will be working with an internal leadership team to ensure a smooth transition.
Caring for our patients is our highest priority. Our staff of 140, including more than 40 client-facing, healthcare professionals, remains steadfast in our commitment to our clients and patients and we will continue to carry out our mission to provide excellent care to the 35,000 patients and clients who pass through our doors each year in a safe, LGBTQ-focused environment. We comply with the highest ethical and clinical standards in providing patient care.
There is zero tolerance at Mazzoni for anything but best practices and the highest level of care. As is our policy, we will continue to report information, as appropriate, to the relevant authorities. In the case of the recent allegations, our CEO immediately initiated a third-party investigation which is not yet complete. You can share any concerns with Gina Ameci of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, who is leading this investigation, at 215-665-3804.
This is a complex situation and we have an obligation to respect the rights and confidentiality of all parties. We also have an obligation to help ensure that the conclusions we reach are based on facts. The Board and staff at Mazzoni will continue to fulfill these commitments in a way that is professional, respects confidentiality, and thoroughly protects everyone's rights, especially our patients.
