This afternoon we are expecting the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) to protest outside Mazzoni Center’s medical practice with hateful messages targeting transgender people. The WBC is notorious for their extreme, vitriolic messages and speech - their past targets have included the LGBT community, Catholics, Muslims, and Jews, as well as U.S. soldiers and their families. They have specifically chosen to protest Mazzoni Center because of the care and services we provide to the trans and gender nonconforming communities. In fact we could not be more proud of our work and its impact -- just... More
I’ve been in Philly for about two years, and as much as I have come to enjoy my time here my heart will forever be with my home state of Florida - especially with the city of Orlando where I was a faithful resident for five formative years. Orlando was where I completed my undergrad career, and also became the place where I truly found myself and fully explored a burgeoning queer identity which has become a huge part of all of the beautiful things that make me who I am today. Although I never had the pleasure of attending Pulse back then there were scores of other LGBTQ spaces in... More
Mazzoni Center Legal Services, in collaboration with our friends at the ACLU of Pennsylvania , have put together a two-sided flyer, explaining the legal rights of anyone involved in a protest. Side one of this flyer was prepared by the ACLU of PA, and outlines some basic do’s and don’ts to stay safe in an encounter with law enforcement officials. Side two provides additional considerations for trans and gender variant protesters, prepared by our team at Mazzoni Legal Services. This includes an outline of... More

This is a difficult time for our community. LGBTQ communities around the country and around the world – particularly LGBTQ communities of color – are deeply impacted by the senseless tragedy in Orlando. In solidarity with Orlando, as a community, we also experience the feelings of shock, anger, and grief. In response, Mazzoni Center’s Open Door program has made staff available to provide crisis counseling by phone or on a drop-in basis for anyone in the community who need extra support at this time. In addition, the Open Door, in collaboration with the Therapy Center of... More
All of us are reeling from the news of early Sunday morning’s mass murder at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida that has left at least 49 people dead and many more severely injured. As more details about the tragic act of violence have been confirmed, we now know that this was a deliberate attack on an LGBTQ space, and specifically a space for queer Latinx people, who made up the vast majority of those killed and wounded, to come together and find community. It is believed that at least half of those murdered were... More
