What is Youth Space?
Youth Space is a scheduled space for youth ages 12-18. Facilitated by Mazzoni Center staff, youth community members, and members of HAVEN Youth Group, Youth Space is a safe and fun space for teens to play games, learn skills, engage in dialogue, and engage in activites made specifically for them.
Who is in charge of Youth Space?
All staff and volunteers in Youth Space are required to have their state and federal child abuse clearances.
What does a day in Youth Space look like?
There are organized activities and there are “chill time” blocks where teens can play games, make crafts, and hang out. Some activities we have had in the past include: Music Exploration, Know Your Rights, Guitar 101, Making a Space that Doesn’t Exist: Queer Theater as Empathy, Activism and Interrogation, Gender is a Construct-Let’s Rebuild It, Dance Party, Steven Universe Screening and Discussion, and Bring it Back to Center: Mindfulness and Stretching. Youth Space opens at 9:00 am each day of the conference.
Will food be provided for my child?
Lunch is also provided each day with gluten-free, vegan, and meat options. Snacks and water are provided throughout the day for folks to grab whenever they please. If your child has specific dietary restrictions, please ask them to bring a packed lunch/snacks or be prepared to purchase their own food outside of the Convention Center. Lastly, Youth Space is a nut free zone!
What are the security measures for Youth Space?
Youth Space has trained and licensed security guards stationed outside at all times. For their privacy and safety, both Youth Space and Kids Camp (for ages 5-11) are sectioned off from all other workshop rooms and have their own private bathroom located directly outside of the space. However, once your teen leaves the Youth Space area, they are on their own like any other conference attendee. We do have Convention Center staff, Mazzoni Center staff, and PTWC volunteers all over the Convention Center to provide assistance and support whenever needed. Mazzoni staff have distinguished badges with STAFF ribbons and Volunteers are in bright colored VOLUNTEER shirts.
How do I register my child/children?
The beauty of Youth Space is there is no need to register! Teens are welcome to pop in and out anytime, giving them the freedom to attend Youth Space workshops and General Track workshops that appeal to them.
