Mazzoni Center Medical Providers are committed to working collaboratively with patients at risk for cervical cancer, specifically individuals with a uterus between the ages of 21 and 65.

Prevention is key to reducing cervical cancer risk. The Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is highly effective. Vaccination is recommended at age 9, with insurance usually covering up to age 26. Ages 9 to 14 need two doses; those 15 or older need three. Adults aged 26 to 45 who are not previously vaccinated should consult their health care provider about eligibility.

Regardless of HPV vaccination status, all individuals with a uterus aged 21 to 65 should undergo cervical cancer screening, either with a Pap smear or an HPV test. (Please consult your provider to determine the most appropriate test.) Individuals aged 21 to 29 are generally screened every three years, while those aged 30 and older may be screened every five years. Cervical cancer screening may be discontinued after age 65 if recent screening results have been normal; this should be discussed with your provider.

Mazzoni Center encourages patients with a uterus to update their medical records if they have previously undergone cervical cancer screening, enabling us to determine when the next screening is due. This process supports our commitment to promoting your well-being and providing comprehensive care to the Mazzoni Center community.
