Mazzoni Center Welcomes Dr. Nancy Brisbon as its Medical Director

Mazzoni Center, Philadelphia’s home for LGBTQ Health and Well-being, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nancy Brisbon, MD as our new Medical Director. Dr. Brisbon was offered the position after a thorough interview and vetting process conducted by a search committee and the Board of Directors.  Dr. Brisbon’s appointment was announced to the full staff on Thursday, September 21, 2017 prior to the dissemination of this release.

"We are honored and delighted to have Dr. Nancy Brisbon assume the challenging role of Medical Director at Mazzoni Center,” Stephen Glassman, interim CEO, said. “She brings a passion for family medicine and sensitivity to the needs of the patients and clients in our practice; she will be a model of integrity and compassion for those who rely on us for their health care services.”

The selection of our new medical director involved input from all departments of our agency, and from the Philadelphia LGBTQIA community. The Medical Director Selection Committee included both management and non-management level staff from many different departments, along with 2 community representatives. In addition, staff representatives from each department had the opportunity to interview Dr. Brisbon, and provide formal feedback to the committee. In the end, the committee unanimously supported Dr. Brisbon's appointment as our next Medical Director.

“I’m excited and am truly looking forward to working with all the providers,” said Dr. Nancy Brisbon. “We have a lot of new ideas to share with the community.”

Dr. Brisbon is a Philadelphia native and graduate of Temple University School of Medicine. She trained at Thomas Jefferson University Department of Family and Community Medicine and has additional training as a Primary Care Clinical Research Fellow (Thomas Jefferson) and earned a Masters of Public Health at Thomas Jefferson. Board certified in family medicine, she has been providing care at Mazzoni Center for the past ten years. Dr. Brisbon and her wife, Janine, live in West Philadelphia with their two sons.

As an internal candidate she has had significant experience working with the staff.

“I love the staff,” Dr. Brisbon said. “They are so welcoming and it’s wonderful to work with everybody. I think we are a really good team, we are fun, supportive, and everyone is good at what they do.”

Dr. Brisbon added, “I am humbled, excited and awed, mostly for all of us to participate in the conversation and talk about where we are going and how we are moving forward, that is what I’m most looking forward to, to be able to facilitate those conversations and hear everyone’s ideas.”

In this new role as the Medical Director, Dr. Brisbon’s focus in the future will be, “continuing to provide the great care that we do for the HIV positive and trans communities, looking into aging issues, and reach out to the older people in the community. I also want to reach out to couples who want to have or are having babies, and let the community know that we can provide pediatric care.”

Dr. Brisbon added that she wants to, “revitalize our clinical research and build an infrastructure which, over time, will put us in line with what other major LGBTQ health centers do.”
