Tony Nominee Lorna Courtney Joins November Stephen Schwartz Benefit Concert

Lorna Courtney, who has been bringing the house down in the title role of Broadway’s “& Juliet,” a star turn that earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical, has joined the long list of performers for “Mazzoni Center Honors,” the November 13 All-Star Benefit Concert honoring legendary Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center.

On joining the Mazzoni Center Honors line-up, Courtney says “There are certain people in this world that just have light behind their eyes. Stephen Schwartz is one of those people. It’s an honor to be able to celebrate him and his legacy in conjunction with all the wonderful and important work that the Mazzoni Center offers!”

Other artists previously announced for the November 13 tribute concert include Jason Robert Brown, Paula Cole, Charlotte d’Amboise, J Harrison Ghee, Lauren Hart, Telly Leung, Terrence Mann, Lizzy McAlpine, Martha Wash, and the Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus. Soledad O’Brien will serve as the concert’s host. The event is being produced by Richard Barone with musical director, Nick Wilders.

With both Ghee and Newell in the line-up, the benefit concert has the distinction of featuring every trans or non-binary actor who has ever won a Tony Award for a musical.

As part of the evening’s festivities, Schwartz will be presented with a special award in recognition of his musical and humanitarian impact.

In addition to the evening’s headline performers, the event is slated to feature much local Philadelphia talent, from members of the Philadelphia Orchestra to the Brian Sanders’ JUNK dance troupe, along with local choirs and other VIPs.
