Every third week of November we celebrate Transgender Awareness Week to help increase understanding about transgender people and the issues members of the community face. This year, speaking up about this is more important than ever.
What is Transgender Awareness Week?
Transgender Awareness Week is a week when transgender people and their allies take action to bring attention to the trans community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community. The week ends with Trans Day of Remembrance a day created to remember those Trans individuals we lost to violence.
As we celebrate the week, here are resources and upcoming events that support the Trans community:
Trans Resource Marketplace - Thursday November 21
Mazzoni Center is partnering with Bebashi and PCHA to bring the Trans Resource Marketplace to Mazzoni Center on Thursday, November 21. On this day, individuals can come in and access clothes, shoes, gender-affirming items, warm referrals, and more. Starts at 5:00 pm at 1348 Bainbridge St.
2024 LGBTQ+ Affirming Resource Guide - Link
This guide includes nearly 150 LGBTQ+ affirming resources for all kinds of needs. From food pantries to community centers, LGBTQ+ affirming therapists to transition resources, and plastic surgeons to case management.
Mazzoni Center Honors George Takei - Link
Please join us to celebrate the Star Trek and LGBTQ Advocate George Takei at Mazzoni Center Honors. Join George in the audience as a star-studded line-up of performers honors him with an evening of music, meaning, and fun. He will be presented with a special award in recognition of his contributions to the arts and his humanitarian impact. The event will be hosted by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning broadcast journalist Soledad O’Brien.
