About Legal Services
On issues within our mission, our help may include advice and, in some circumstances, representation. Or we may be able to refer you to attorneys or other organizations that can help pro bono (without charging legal fees). For people who are not low-income, we can help you identify attorneys in private practice who work on the issues you are dealing with and who have expressed that they are sensitive to LGBTQ people and their legal needs. In addition to direct representation, we also work to advance the rights of LGBTQ people through advocacy, education, and training. Our legal services include:
- Name Change Petitions for people who are transgender, nonbinary, intersex, or gender-expansive
- Adoption and custody
- Relationship recognition and dissolution
- Advanced planning and wills
- Elder law issues
- Employment, housing, and public accommodation discrimination
- Equal access to education
- Health care discrimination
- Insurance coverage for medically necessary gender-affirming healthcare
Our team also works to reduce discrimination and other obstacles that can deter or exclude LGBTQ people from employment and civic life through informing, educating, and training members of the public, the legal profession (including judges), employers, and service providers about laws protecting LGBTQ adults and young people against discrimination, and practices for advancing workplace equality.
Our work is made possible because of volunteers and interns. If you are a legal professional, law student, or college student interested in joining us as a volunteer, intern, or sponsored legal fellowship, please visit Join Us.
